Abstract

Performance-Based Seismic Design (PBSD) represents a paradigm shift in structural engineering, moving beyond life safety to ensure buildings maintain specific functionality during earthquakes, thereby minimizing lifecycle costs. This review synthesizes the evolution and application of PBSD specifically for shear wall structures, which are critical components in modern high-rise construction. Based on an analysis of global structural damage models, the study establishes a statistical framework for damage indices across various performance states, providing quantitative macroscopic descriptions of structural damage. It further evaluates prevalent damage models for shear walls using experimental data and outlines a systematic PBSD methodology, including essential construction measures.Key findings indicate that while current codes effectively prevent collapse, they often fail to control non-structural damage and property losses. The review highlights that existing research is relatively scarce regarding the plastic-stage failure mechanisms of shear walls, particularly high-strength concrete shear walls. Consequently, this paper argues that refining PBSD methodologies to focus on displacement control is essential for addressing the functional demands of modern architecture. This work serves as a comprehensive reference for advancing the practical application and theoretical research of seismic design in shear wall structures.
