Aims: This study aimed to characterise the food products marketed in a densely populated urban area, evaluate compliance with BPOM food-labelling regulations, and assess food hygiene practices among food business operators. Study Design: This study used a descriptive observational design. Data were obtained through direct observation, converted into quantitative measures, and analysed descriptively to describe the characteristics of the observed variables. Place and Duration of Study: Food vendors in the Babarsari and Seturan areas, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Methodology: The sample included all food vendors in the Babarsari and Seturan areas who had operated at a fixed location for at least one year. The types of food and beverages sold were recorded, classified into predefined categories, and analysed descriptively. The results were expressed as percentages and interpreted based on field observations. Results: A total of 83 permanent food vendors were identified in the Babarsari and Seturan areas. Bakery products constituted the most frequently marketed food category. Overall, compliance with BPOM food-labelling regulations was limited, and adherence to recommended food safety and hygiene practices among vendors was insufficient. Conclusion: This study showed that compliance with food-labelling requirements and the implementation of food hygiene practices among vendors in the study area remained inadequate. The findings may inform targeted food safety interventions, regulatory supervision, and continuing education for food business operators.
