Abstract

Purpose: The study aims to retrospectively evaluate the newborn hearing screening results in the Erzincan Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital. Materials and Methods: The study retrospectively presents the newborn hearing screening results of 12827 babies who were either born in the Erzincan Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital or were transferred to the hospital from epicentres between January 2012 and December 2017. The hearing screening tests were conducted by the TEOAE (Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions) and ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response) methods. The babies who failed the initial TEOAE screening test were retested with TEOAE after 15 days. The babies who failed the TEOAE test were evaluated with the ABR test. Results: Among 12827 babies, 6136 (47.84%) failed the initial hearing test. Among 4815 babies who were readmitted for a second test, 425 babies failed the TEOAE test again. 300 of the babies who failed the control emission test underwent ABR, and 51 babies (0.3%) who failed the ABR test were transferred to various clinics. Conclusion: Dissemination of screening program allows for early diagnosis and treatment. To reach the goal, specialists and their families have to do their part.
